Recovering Scrapped Ideas
YARVEL: OLD ART, DESIGNS, AND SCRAPPED CONCEPTS.
Yarvel has changed radically from my inital conception of her.

Large, dead looking eyes was one element I still kept for her character. I distinctly remember this detail from the dream that inspired this character in the first place:
I once had this dream in which I was playing an RPG maker game, who made it or where I downloaded it from I do
not recall. I had a distinct memory of wandering through the vivid pixelated foilage which permeated the map I
was exploring, until I stumbled upon a tall rocky cliff area with sparse plant-life in contrast to the rest of
the map. There was an NPC in this area, with titanium white skin, clothes, and hair. The NPC had wings and a
halo. Upon talking to the NPC I was greeted with a 50x50px talking sprite revealing the NPC had a cracked halo
and the text:
HELLO! I AM AN ANGEL. CAN YOU HELP ME FIND MY WAY HOME?
I NEED:
AN INCORRUPTIBLE HEART, BLOOD, WINGS
AND A NEW HALO.
I spent the rest of this dream collecting all of the items, and upon returning to the NPC I was prompted to give each item that I collected. To which I was greeted by the text:
HEY.
THANKS.
I distinctly recall the talking sprites showing the NPC looking directly at me, with the eyes moving off to the
side during the "THANKS." dialogue. The NPC's wings began moving and it hopped about the overworld map in an
unusually smooth and highly animated way, fluttering back and forth erratically and quickly in a manner that
reminded me of a butterfly manuvering around. The NPC then flew upwards and off-screen. After about thirty
seconds a pile of the NPC's skin fell from the sky onto the ground of the overworld, with droplets of blood
spewing down with it. I woke up after this part of the dream wondering what it meant, and the idea fluttered
around in my head for a while. The decided I wanted to make a character based on this concept, this character I
dubbed as Yarvel. However, I would eventually divorce her nearly entirely from this concept as I developed her. Ultimately deciding that I wanted to utilize her in my "Abandoned Lands"
comic.
Here is some early concept art featuring her early design and inspiration.

This piece was done as art study utilizing a 2024 Goretober prompt.

This piece was initially much larger and while I didn't like how everything turned out I did enjoy the process of creating this piece.

I pushed myself quite a bit with some of these pieces although I feel like my technical execution was not quite where I wanted it to be yet.

Another Goretober 2024 piece, I think the prompt was Gut Spill?

Goretober 2024 with the prompt "Vomit"

Goretober 2024 with the prompt Sharp Objects. I remember not being satisfied with how it turned out at the time.

This one I drew kind of mindlessly when I was trying to keep in the habit of drawing.

Older Yarvel piece featuring the concept of her having a bird cage & within her chest.

One of the earliest concepts I had for Yarvel's modern character design.

I may one day revisit this concept with another character. Stay tuned!
QUROTH: OLD ART, DESIGNS, AND SCRAPPED CONCEPTS.

Quroth is one of the oldest characters I concieved of for my "Abandoned Lands" comic, or more accurately, I concieved of the plot that would become "Abandoned Lands" for her in a way. As I wanted to give her a narrative purpose in a plotline. Despite concieving of the story in large part due to her, she is not the protagonist of it. Rather I made Azure the protagonist because I felt that she served the best narrative purpose in enhancing the themes of the story.

Goretober 2024 Prompt "Too much Blood" While I have changed quite a few things design-wise (mostly simplification of certain details as her role in a comic requires me to redraw her design a lot) I think her overall "feel" as a character has remained largely the same.

Goretober 2024 Prompt "Bones" featuring Quroth's old design, I was still experimenting with how I wanted her horns to sit on her head. She also has her scrapped Demonia-inspired boot design, which I choose purely for rule-of-cool reasons and later scrapped. You can see the first iteration of the "visual distortion" effect when on camera in this piece. I kept this idea but haven't gotten to a point in storyboarding where it's particularly shown off yet. I wanted Quroth's face to sometimes appear skeletal when caught on footage.

Another piece depicting her old boots design. Despite this design being outdated I kept most of these drawings in the gallery since I didn't feel like the current iteration of her character deviated too much from this older iteration.

In this one you can see her old spiked gauntlets, while I am still fond of this design element I feel like the current steel-gauntlets is a better compromise. Fun fact, you can still find this piece on the 404 page for this website!

This drawing is the only one IIRC, that I removed from the gallery due to it blatantly clashing conceptually with what I had in mind for Quroth's character. I imagined her having OCD early on but not particularly contamnination OCD, particularly with carcinogens. As I fleshed out her backstory and character I realized that was the direction I wanted to go in.
